At Konpayon, we believe in giving our friends in Bayonnais a “hand up, not a hand out.” We focus on development rather than relief because they are two distinct ways of helping.
What does that mean in practice?
Relief focuses on immediate crises like natural disasters, political turmoil, disease, or famine. For instance, we sent critical aid following Haiti's 2010 earthquake and cholera outbreak. We have also raised emergency funds when high prices and limited availability caused food shortages. While necessary, relief only provides short-term solutions. Studies even show that continuous relief can hinder a community's ability to develop self-sufficiency.
That is why our teams in Charlotte and Bayonnais focus on development.
We partner with local leaders to build long-term solutions. Our mission is to walk alongside this community and build partnerships that lead to sustainable growth. Lasting change cannot happen from a distance. It requires collaborative, trust-filled relationships over time.
